The diamond-shaped Castillo de San Marcos was completed by the Spanish in 1695 in order to protect St. Augustine, the first permanent European settlement in the continental United States. Operated by the National Park Service and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Castillo de San Marcos is open daily (except Christmas day) from 8:45 AM to 4:45 PM (except for Christmas Day). Castillo de San Marcos admission for 2008 is $6 for adults and free for ages 15 and under (when accompanied by a paying adult).
